There’s a misconception out there that being generous takes time and energy; time and energy that, at the end of the day, we don’t always have to spare. Not that that’s to say we should only be generous if it’s easy or convenient – we should always be willing to stretch our comfort zone far enough to include someone who’s completely out of theirs – but it is to say that the best way to give of ourselves is to be realistic about what we can and cannot fit into our busy schedules and modest budgets.
The good news is that giving doesn’t always have to be hard, require a lot of effort, or even money – so if you or your family are looking for a great way to give back this year, but are feeling short on time or money, consider The Greater Good.
The Greater Good is a network of websites that was established on the “click-to-give” premise in 1999. For each “click” recorded on the site, sponsors donate funds that go directly to supporting charities and those in need. Since then, they have given more than $29 million to non-profit charities around the world. It’s this reason that makes the site one of my “required” visits every day when I get onto the internet – it’s a quick and easy way to make a difference in the lives of people (and animals) who are less fortunate.
Every day you can support their specific daily project on The Greater Good’s main page, as well as: fight against world hunger, fund a free mammogram for a woman in need, provide a meal for a veteran in need, fund therapy for a child with autism, donate to diabetes research, put a book in the hands of a child, provide for food and care for a shelter animal, and protect vital rainforest habitat for wildlife. All without leaving your house – or even getting off the couch.
In addition to being able to make a difference around the world with just a click of a button, you can also support charity while you shop! (Which is pretty awesome, what with holiday shopping directly upon us, and all). Every item you buy does something – like fund 25 cups of food for the hungry, help provide a woman with a free mammogram, or preserve at least 1,145 sq. ft. of rainforest land – and these are only a few of the ways in which your purchases can change lives or contribute to a healthier world for us all.
Why not give two gifts this season – one to a loved one, and one to someone you’ve never met before – by helping support these wonderful charities!
And if your time and budget allows for more this year, The Greater Good offers a variety of other ways that you can help support your community. You can also make direct donations to charities of your choice, and find information regarding hands-on ways to contribute, as well.
